Video Flashback: Makerere University 10 percent tuition policy strike

All official activities were suspended. Then vice chancellor, Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, explained that the policy was intended to ensure smooth running of the university.

“Tests kicked off last weekend and some students don’t want to pay tuition; how do they expect the university to run? The policy requires them to pay that percentage before sitting these tests, and that’s what is causing the strike,” Ddumba-Ssentamu said.

He added that according to the information from the university bursar, about 20,000 students or about 50 per cent of the university’s enrollment had abided by the policy.
