How Uneb Withheld Results

The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakol says the national examination body has withheld results for 4,525 Senior Four candidates

She was on Wednesday releasing the 2017 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations results at the Office of the Prime – OPM Minister in Kampala.

“UNEB is withholding results of 4,525 candidates (1.4% of candidates who sat) from 112 centres suspected to have involved themselves in various forms of examination malpractice,” Prof Okwakol explained.

Process for withholding results

Before withholding results, the Uneb board receives information from various sources, e.g supervisors, invigilators, examiners and scouts.

Scripts of suspected cases are scrutinised.

That is how the board withheld results of 4,525 candidates from various examination centres.

Results are withheld or cancelled with the approval of the Minister of Education and Sports.

Okwakol said 81 people suspected to have been involved in examinations malpractice were arrested by police while 49 suspects appeared in court.

Prof Okwakol said UNEB has registered a drop in the number of candidates.

“Males performed better than females. Females performed better in English,” she noted, adding that absenteeism among girls is decreasing.

According to Okwakol, the performance of candidates shows an improvement by 10% up from 7% in 2016.

Gender disparity
Gender performance disparities in the Uganda certificate of education remains high after the male students out competed their female counterparts in the 2017 exams.

Releasing the 2017 UCE exams at the office of the prime minister, the UNEB executive secretary said that just like it has been in the previous years, male candidates have performed better than their female counterparts in all subjects except English where girls out performed boys.

Mr Odongo noted that the disparities between performance of male and females candidates has been observed over the years calling for immediate intervention by the government to close the gaps.
