Makerere University School of law (SoL) has today suspended their strike, allowing evening programme to continue.
Following meetings held on 29 and 30 January, 2018, involving SoL leadership and University Management, regarding lecturer’s suspension of evening programme, the staff at the School has agreed to temporarily suspend their industrial action on conditions.
According to Dr Okello Ogwanga, the acting Vice Chancellor -VC, the University Management agreed to pay, funds to SoL for peculiar needs not later than 14 February, 2018.
Other conditions agreed upon include, funds for evening teaching for semester one of the academic year 2017/2018 be paid not later than 14, February, 2018, the arrears for evening teaching for the academic year 2016/2017 be paid by the end of this semester.
The University Management also agreed to refurbish structures at the SoL immediately after receiving a report from the Estates and Works Department.
Prof Christopher Mbazira, the principal SoL, has confirmed that the school has amicably agreed to suspend the industrial action after consultations with the Management.
“This is to inform you that, following negotiation between the School and management, an amicable settlement has been reached regarding the management of evening programmes. As a result, the staff of the school has suspended their industrial action. For this reason, the suspension of teaching evening students has been lifted. Teaching starts immediately,” reads Prof Mbazira’s letter.
Well as the department of Journalism and communication, School of Social Sciences and College of Veterinary Medicine are yet to come to an agreement with the university management regarding a similar matter.
Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the University’s VC blames the current misunderstandings regarding evening teaching at Makerere to lack of communication between concerned parties.
“Council resolved to compensate staff working on evening programmes and Management is working on modalities to implement that decision. I appeal to staff & (sic) students to remain calm,” Nawangwe twitted
“The temporary suspension of evening classes by the School of Law has been lifted after consultations with Management. I thank the staff and students at SoL for their maturity in handling this matter,” reads Nawangwe’s tweet.
He however, regretted the disruptions in evening classes and promised that the university is working find the solution.
“I regret the disruptions in evening classes. A solution has been found and lectures should commence immediately. I thank the gallant Makerere Students for their maturity,” he added
