Makerere University has indefinitely suspended Mr. Ronald Ainebyona for defaming the dean of students and publicly asserting to bribing the chairperson of the guild electoral commission.
Mr Ainebyona, a third year student of Bachelor of Law at Makerere University on 7 March, petitioned Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor to suspend the Dean of students Mr Cyriaco Kabagambe on allegations of soliciting a bribe of (5.6M) from him to let his name on the nomination list without following the process.
He alleged the said people have ignored him since then and refused to refund his money after failing to meet their end of the bargain and consequently not nominating him.
However, his allegations were trashed by Mr Kabagambe saying he has never had any conversation with Ainebyona on matters of guild nominations.
According to the suspension letter seen by Cyclone Times , Prof. Nawangwe states in a letter presented to him by Dean of Students, Ainebyona is accused of presenting forged academic results to the guild electoral commission for nomination; defaming the person of the Dean of Students; and publicly admitting to bribing the chairperson of the guild electoral commission.
“Accordingly, I hereby suspend you from the University with immediate effect you are strongly advised to desist from any access to the University premises and/or interaction with any student of the University until your case is completed and leave the university with immediate effect, reads part of the Vice Chancellors letter to Ainebyona.
He has suspended pending investigations into meaning that he is going miss out on sitting coursework and tests scheduled for Monday next week.
However, according to his lawyers M/s. Centre for Legal Aid in a letter to the Prof Nawangwe they griped the arbitrary suspension of their client that is neither backed by law nor consistent with principles of natural justice.
They have also complained about indefinite suspension of their client, saying that, any suspension longer than one week is untenable in law.
The VC last Thursday suspended the guild elections which were scheduled to take place on Friday 26, till further notice over students electoral commission incompetence and hooliganism among rival camps.
Last week, the students electoral body chairman Mr Makumbi Peter resigned his position on claims of bribery and new chairman Isabirye was installed and Makerere guild elections are being conducted today
