The alarming sanitation conditions at Makerere student’s halls of residence to see solution as officials hint there’s a policy in the pipeline to revamp all students’ residing areas.
Over the years students at Makerere have decried poor sanitation status of their halls of residence citing problems such as lack of piped water, lack of constant electricity supply, stinking shower-rooms, poor sanitation and poor hygiene in the halls.
Others include foul stench emanating from the toilets, overcrowded rooms at Complex, poor quality meals among others.
However, the Vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said that the University has a plan to make students’ welfare on and off campus improved.
“We have embarked on an ambitious plan to improve conditions in halls of residence and build new modern hostels on campus” Nawangwe added
The VC added that in an effort to improve student welfare, the University Management has established a forum which brings together owners of private student hostels around campus intended to improve security and living conditions of Makerere students.
Last year officials from Kampala Capital City Authority – KCCA warned about the risk of exposure of the students’ population to diseases and the Executive Director Jennifer Musisi threatened to shut down Makerere University’s halls of residence due to poor sanitation.
These halls accommodate government sponsored students and a few privately sponsored students at a small fee.
The halls include: Mitchell, Livingstone, Nsibirwa, Nkrumah, Lumumba, Africa, Complex hall, Dag, Kabanyoro, and Mary Stuart.
