Students at the School of Social Sciences, Makerere University have today morning stormed the office of Dr Anthony Juma Okuku a lecturer at the school in protest of his decision to cancel out 400 student’s scripts.
Dr Okuku locked himself inside after irritated students attacked his office with placards and big sticks demanding for their results after being notified by an insider that he had cancelled out their results of Urban and rural development for suspected malpractice.
Holding placards, the students stormed lecturers’ office chanting “we want marks.”
The students who were donned in university red gowns carrying placards with inscription “Our marks today!”
Dr Okuku accuses students of malpractice in Urban and Rural Development however; the scripts that police and social science authorities have recovered from his home were yet to be marked a year after.
Students allege that for many times Dr Okuku has not been making their scripts but end up giving them retakes.
Students say, they have waited for their results for a whole year all in vain.
Most of these concerned students are in their final semester at the University.
Wasswa Hassan, the class representative the of the acted class says the school has the biggest number of students and getting back their results has always been a big struggle, provoking students to strikes most times.
Mr Abdul Kareem Ziritwawula, the 2017 guild contestant who is equally affected by the matter told Cyclone Times that they are not going to allow lectures at the school until their issue is sorted given that they are in their final semester at the university.
“Enough is enough for these marks games, we want out marks and today, we are not allowing any classes to continue until we are sorted. And we are demanding that the university to provide us with lunch because this is their problem” Ziritwawula said.
While addressing the angry students, Dr Andrew State Erias, the dean of school of social sciences said that the school authority is engaging with Dr Okuku to recover student’s scripts for a remark.
“We know your problem and we have already recovered all of your scripts, we are going to give them to a neutral lecturer for re-marking. Keep calm we are in control of everything,” Dr State said.
“Even if there is copying, a whole class cant copy, that cannot happen” he added
He added that the school authorities are going to hold a meeting with Dr Okuku together with Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the University’s Vice Chancellor for a way forward on Dr Okuku’s future at the school.
