Makerere Stuck with Graduation Gowns

Makerere University yesterday afternoon collided with Wandegeya traders over patented graduation gowns.

The officials in the University want police to stop all illegal traders who are selling these gowns within and outside campus.

A Gown from illegal sellers around Wandegeya and Kikoni ranges between sh. 60, 000 and sh. 85,000 while the University official gown at Senate building costs Sh.98, 000

According to traders, the University illegally procured one man known as Stephen Kasumba who did not go through the right procurement process.

Traders allege that the University did not open bids for possible suppliers of these gowns to allow them to participate.

Kaggwa Abraham, a graduate from the School of Human Nutrition said he is yet to buy for his own because official gowns at senate are expensive.

“I have cleared for all other necessary requirements except the gown. Let me see what will happen towards graduation days. I think they will slightly reduce,” Kaggwa said.

However, Alfred Namoah Masikye, the Makerere University Academic Registrar has subsequently warned students against purchasing gowns from other places apart from the designated office at Senate basement.
