Eddie Hearn is hoping to sign Deontay Wilder to a promotional agreement which could pave the way to the richest heavyweight fight in history against Anthony Joshua.
Wilder, the current WBC champion, was supposed to fly into Cardiff this week to be ringside for Joshua’s unification contest with Joseph Parker at the Principality Stadium on Saturday night.
WBA and IBF titlist Joshua and WBO belt-holder Parker will clash before a crowd of around 80,000 in what is the first ever meeting of undefeated heavyweight champions on British soil.
Sky had lined up Wilder to work on their live broadcast but the Alabama puncher decided against making the trip after being told he would not be allowed in the ring after the fight to confront the winner.
Hearn has criticised Wilder’s decision not to be in attendance given the magnitude of the fight and believes he is being poorly advised by his management.
But the Matchroom boss senses an opportunity with the 40-0 world champion, who is currently not contracted to a promotional company.
Now Hearn is hoping Wilder, whose career high pay day is around £1.5m, will be tempted into an agreement with him by the promise of a series of bumper purses.
When asked if he will look to sign Wilder, Hearn said: ‘I think that’s a real possibility.
‘Imagine how big Deontay Wilder would be if he signed for us, in the heavyweight mix that we’ve got.
