MBARARA – The western Uganda town of Mbarara town woke up to shock on Thursday morning when a building under construction at Rwizi Arch Hotel collapsed following heavy downpour leading to a disaster at the hotel with guests affected.
The police spent the rest of Wednesday night in rescue efforts as more than 20 people including guests are feared trapped in the collapsed hotel, eye witnesses said. Reports that Cyclone Times has received indicate that so far eight people have been confirmed dead.
The rain that struck the area on Wednesday evening lasted about three hours (from around 6pm-9pm).
Eye witness reported that running water around the same area swept unspecified number of people who were traveling on boda bodas.
Police had by Thursday morning recovered bodies of three Bodaboda cyclists including of a one Vincent Mubangizi. They were trapped in trenches.
Rwizi Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira says the police continues in the rescue efforts Thursday morning.
A source speaking to this website stated: “Rwizi arch hotel constructed some structures on top of the water channel. Now coz of the overflow, those structures were swept away.”
