Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Court has charged Aunt Lususu aka Fiona Namawejje over the illegal use of Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Quality Mark.
Namawejje Fiona, a resident of Makindye Divison who deals in cosmetics business branded Aunt Lususu, was yesterday (Thursday) put before grade one magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu for illegal use of UNBS Mark on her cosmetics products.
According to the charge shit, Namawejje on September 14, 2017 at Aunt Lususu Shop no.404A, Nakasero Complex in Kampala District, used UNBSQ-mark on her cosmetics products called Aunt Lususu Face Clearing Jelly, Aunt Lususu Family Jelly, and Aunt Lususu Cosmetics UNBS permission.
Court has ordered Aunt Lususu to pay a cash bail of Shs1 million and to deposit her original motor vehicle logbook before being granted bail.
Court also ordered her sureties to sign a non-cash bond of Shs100 million each, deposit their original car logbooks before court, land titles and land agreements correspondingly.
The case adjourned to February 19, 2018.
Namawejje was arrested yesterday after UNBS seized 1.7 tonnes of mixed cosmetics items worth Shs300 million from Sure Deal Beauty Centre Limited on February 2.
UNBS has done similar operations to reduce low quality items on the market; however, sections of the public strongly criticize the institution for seizing people’s business yet government has done nothing to create jobs for citizens though some side with the body saying it reduces hazardous items on the market.
