14 suspects escape from Jail in Kyotera

Police Flying Squad are hunting for 14 suspects who escaped from a cell at Kyotera Police Station.

According to the Deputy Regional Police spokesman, Mr Lameck Kigozi, the suspects escaped by digging through the wall of the police station on Wednesday night.

The suspects were arrested between February and March this year but had not been taken to court.

Mr Kigozi said the suspects were helped by some officers at the station to escape and that officers on duty have since recorded statements.

He said the missing suspects were discovered during the Thursday morning parade.

And now residents are in panic that the suspects, most of whom had been arrested over robbery, drug abuse, assault and rape, may return to haunt them.

The prison escape comes days after two convicts escaped from court in Masaka, where they were being tried in connection with the rising spate of murders in the region.

Greater Masaka region has since last year been a hotspot of bloodshed as unknown assailants attack homes and hack people to death. So far this year, more than 5 people have been killed, forcing police and the army to camp in the area.
