10.6 million problems reported worldwide due to Facebook apps shutdown

Following a close to six hours worldwide shutdown of social media services Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, 10.6 million problems were reported worldwide.

According to down detector which tracks outages, the situation was described as the largest failure to ever be seen since such a large number of problems was reported more over on a worldwide basis.

This occurred after a breakdown that started at around 16:00 GMT lasted for about six hours and subscribers started accessing the services of the Facebook family apps at around 22:00 GMT again.

During the shutdown, all the three apps owned by Facebook which include Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram could not be accessed via smartphones which sparked off the outrage.

In a bid to calm the situation, Facebook released a statement where they explained that the faulty configuration change affected the company’s internal tools and systems which complicated attempts to resolve the problem.

The company did not stop at that as it went in to explain that during the shutdown, “no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.”

Aside from this statement, the founder of this social network Mark Zuckerberg had earlier on apologized to those affected by the outage as he said,

“Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are coming back online now. Sorry for the disruption today — I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.”
